LVP/LVT
LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) or LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) is made up of vinyl planks instead of one large vinyl sheet. This product is one of the most popular flooring materials on the market, as it is a wood-look product that shares characteristics of hardwood and is waterproof. Similarly, LVT gives that “tile-look” when considering to floor bathrooms, kitchens and other areas. When shopping this floor, some features to take into consideration are thickness and wear-layer along with length and width. A good thickness is a 20 mm product with a wear-layer 8-12mil. The product can be installed two different ways: glue-down and floating with a click-lock system.
Recommendation: Reasons to replace heavily traveled carpeted areas with Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) flooring:
Durability: LVP is more durable than carpet, resisting wear, stains, and moisture. This makes it ideal for high-traffic areas, homes with pets, or spaces prone to spills.
Easy Maintenance: LVP is easier to clean and maintain compared to carpet. It can be swept, vacuumed, and mopped, reducing allergens and dust accumulation.
Aesthetics: LVP offers a modern, sleek appearance that can mimic the look of hardwood or stone, enhancing the visual appeal of a space.
Long-Term Value: While the initial cost may be higher, LVP can increase property value due to its longevity and low maintenance needs.
Health Benefits: Carpet can trap allergens, dust, and pet dander. LVP, being easier to clean, can contribute to a healthier indoor environment.
Gluedown LVP
Installation Method: The planks are glued directly to the subfloor using an adhesive.
Stability: Very stable, as the glue keeps the planks firmly in place, making it less prone to shifting or expanding.
Sound: Typically quieter underfoot because it is directly attached to the subfloor.
Durability: Good for high-traffic areas, as it resists movement and is less likely to dent.
Subfloor: Requires a smooth, clean, and dry subfloor for proper adhesion.
Floating LVP
Installation Method: The planks are not glued but instead lock together and "float" over the subfloor, usually with an interlocking or click system.
Stability: Can be slightly more prone to movement or expansion, especially in large areas without expansion gaps.
Sound: May have a bit more noise or hollow sound underfoot, depending on the subfloor and underlayment.
Durability: Easier to replace individual planks, but may be less stable in extremely high-traffic areas.
Subfloor: More forgiving, can be installed over a wider range of subfloors, including those that aren’t perfectly smooth.
